Moving

Today I spend the day cleaning up the yard, trimming bushes and pulling a dead bush for a neighbor. Got some fresh, though pollen laden air and got my steps in as well. A little more movement and I’ll close my green ring!

Been working from home for a week and a half and everything goes from normal to ‘oh yea’ we really have no place to go except for food & groceries. We persevere! We’re human thats what we do.

No More Tennis

Today, they closed the tennis courts located near us due to COVID-19. This is a drag. Other than the surface of the lock, there is not much to contaminate. I think they just looped the courts in with the parks and other public space.

Need to figure out how to keep it interesting now!

Lunch

It’s important to make sure you take care of yourself during an event like this. We have not seen anything like this before. Physical health – find ways to move. Take walks (social distance), take advantage of the services that are opening their workout libraries for free and consider your gaming console to see if there are any exercise or activity games available. Some of these you can play with others over the internet as well. This helps with motivation as well as making it more fun.

I’ve been working from home for a week now. To this point, I’ve been doing here what I do at work – eat at my desk. Today, however, I had lunch outside with my wife on the patio. It was quite nice. Very relaxing. Its just as important to monitor your emotional and mental health. Pay as much attention here as you do to your physical health.

Strange

I find myself not reading as much over the last few weeks. I normally read from a book every day, but lately I’ve been focused on news and other non-book stuff. I’m not really sure why. It could be the type of book I’m reading. I picked up the first Murder, She Wrote book. Again, not sure why – probably nostalgia. #nojudging

COVID-19

How does COVID-19 affect my day and my efforts to get healthy? There are aspects that help. I don’t have to drive to and from work (1-2 hours per day) which means I can play tennis or take a walk at a reasonable hour. My home office is now upstairs which means I’m hitting the stairs a lot. It’s no longer “free” to get a cup of coffee now.

Food is a little more interesting. I’ve got a pretty good stock of items. Fresh fruits and veggies will require trips out to the store which is getting a little more risky as the infected numbers continue to rise.

Normal habits are important to maintain. It can be easy to roll out of bed and “go to work” but keeping your routines will add some normalcy to the current situation. I am pretty good, but will be making more of an effort. I added a vitamin reminder as well to make sure I don’t forget!

So far, so good. Hoping everyone stays healthy!

Double Take

I’ve decided to double track some key elements of my plan for the time being. The Omada scale does not send data back to Apple Health so I’m using the Withings as well. This will help calibrate the scale as well as get it tracked in the Health app. Today, the Omada scale was off by a lot. It may be the placement on the floor, and will check tomorrow.

The food tracker in Omada is conversational. You describe what you ate and then specify size and relative healthiness. Until I am comfortable with that method, I’m still adding to FitBit as it gives rough estimates on the makeup of the food. Omada is for the long haul, but the other helps build the muscle on food makeup.

Also, I dug out an old Fitbit Flex that I got free with a Windows Phone. About 6 years ago. Give or take. I want to use that for tracking sleep. Got it fired up yesterday and it worked like a champ. The band was a little strange from sitting in the box for so long. I rubbed off the coating and washed it. Seems fine. This will let me understand how I sleep.

Getting a little chatter in the Omada group. About 4 of the 11 so far. Not too bad.

Also, I’m going to be that annoying non-trad you remember from college getting conversations going and asking questions.

Progress Report

I continue to work on eating the right way and moving more. Journaling is still important and I make a point to do it at least once per day. I officially kicked off Omada today. I’ll see what the weekly report looks like next week and figure out how to incorporate it here.

Basically, lost a few pound and made a little progress in BMI. Adding a few more tracking points this week as well. Found an old FitBit and I’m going to see if I can use that to get some sleep details. Tile today is a placeholder.

The spike in AM glucose(3/21/2020) was partially from booze along with mindless eating (see last post). I’ll try to document what happened with any spikes as we go along as well. Probably don’t need the date on the tiles since they will be in a dated post.

Next: Keep focus. Implement Omada coaching, group and learning.

Mindless Eating

This is such a dangerous and deceptive scenario. You grab a bag or box of something and start eating while you are doing something else. Like watching TV or reading. Time passes and you are in auto-pilot as you eat and watch. Next thing you know you have consumed WAY TOO MUCH.

Since you are not focused on the act of eating, you really have no sense of full. You are just eating to eat. Then you numbers are messed up – no surprise there. Hello morning glucose reading of 175.

What to do? How to avoid this? The easiest way is to only take a small amount of whatever you are enjoying and watch TV or read. You will have to take action to get more. A complication is alcohol. If you have a few and you are not fully on your game (buzzed), this adds an extra degree of difficulty. No good answer here. Hide the snacks before you start 🙂

Hazardous Waste?

I was thinking about stuff that gets generated from glucose testing. For lancing, I use the Accu-Chek Fastclix. This is very easy to use and does not have any exposed needle. That said, it is still considered a “sharp” and the used drums should be put into a heavy duty plastic container. You can also purchase inexpensive sharps containers. When 3/4 full, seal it up with duct tape, mark Do Not Recycle on it and toss it in the garbage.

Your state may have specific requirements on how to dispose of these materials. Check out https://safeneedledisposal.org/ for your state.

For test strips, the consensus seems to be it’s OK to toss right in the garbage. Just like you would a band aid. Easy enough.
