Revisiting Mindless Eating

The learning modules from Omada has some information on this topic.

The scenario: After mindless eating while watching TV you find yourself wanting more, seemingly still hungry. In addition to my thoughts below, there is research that looked at why this happens.

The research suggests that this is because we were not “present” while eating. Essentially, we need to employ all 5 of our senses while eating to ensure out body knows what we’re doing. Even hearing the food go down. How’s that for some science.

As I’ve been paying more attention to eating more slowly, this has a side benefit of paying more attention to the experience. Armed with the knowledge above, I’ll be able to focus more and not turn into food zombie.

Wednesday

Or Tuesday? Does it really matter 🙂

Pretty good day. Did well with food. Not going to walk tonight, but may do some trampoline watching TV. Started a new challenge to eat something green or veggie twice a day. Should be easy as I do that anyway.

Dessert

Found a great recipe the other day. So simple and tasty – just like a real dessert!

Mix nuts, fruit (raspberries, pomegranate, blueberries etc.) into non-fat Greek yogurt. Spread in a pan and freeze it. It makes frozen yogurt bark. Just in time for summer and very nice nutritionally.

A Good Week

This was a pretty good week overall. I’ve been working from home for 2 weeks – longest ever in my career. I’m getting used to the rhythm, and who knows, may do it more in the future. Habits and routine are critical, though. It’s easy to skip things that you have been doing in a normal going-to-work day. I’ve added a habit tracker to help keep me on track and build these new habits.

I’ve eaten a bit more non-salad food this week, but have been watching the portion size. Blood sugar has been pretty good – even with some late nights and a bit of booze. Awareness and knowledge are really important.
